The Centre of Excellence in Smart and Sustainable Construction’s Report on Gender Equity in Construction and Engineering
As part of their commitment to advancing female representation and leadership in the industry, The Centre of Excellence in Smart and Sustainable Construction at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, in partnership with Jacobs, have launched an exploratory study focused on the roles and experiences of Emirati women in the Construction and Engineering industry.
The study was launched in the presence of His Excellency Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi (Chairman of Sharjah Consultative Council), Her Excellency Laila El Atfani, President & Founder, Business Gate & Woman Business Circle & I Am Africa, and His Excellency Yaqoob Al Ali , Executive Director & Private Advisor, Office of His Highness Sheikh Juma Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum at Heriot-Watt University, Dubai Campus.
The study also examines the intricate dynamics of gender equity within the engineering and construction industry.
Some of the key findings from the study are:
Leadership Breakthroughs: Several women interviewed have reached high-ranking leadership positions, showcasing their capacity to break traditional barriers and inspire the next generation.
Challenging Biases: The interviewees shed light on the ongoing subconscious biases and societal norms that pose hurdles to women’s daily job satisfaction and career progression.
Calls for Change: There is a pressing need for policy reforms, such as improved maternity benefits and flexible working conditions, which are crucial for creating a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture.
